What Vegetables Can Rabbits Eat in India? (Safe & Unsafe List + Diet Guide)

🐰 What Vegetables Can Rabbits Eat in India? (Safe & Unsafe List + Diet Guide)

If you’ve recently brought a rabbit home, I’m sure you’ve heard this at least once:

👉 “Arre, just give them kitchen scraps… rabbits eat anything.”

I’ve heard this so many times… from relatives, neighbours, even shopkeepers.

And every time, I feel the need to say this gently but clearly:
👉 Rabbits are NOT scrap-eating animals.

In fact, it’s the opposite.

❗ They have a very sensitive digestive system
❗ Not all vegetables are safe
❗ Even the right vegetables can cause issues if overfed

When I started understanding rabbits better, one thing became very clear to me:
💭 You can’t be casual about their diet.

You don’t have to be paranoid…
But you do have to be aware ❤️

👉
If you’re searching for what vegetables rabbits can eat in India, this guide covers everything — from safe leafy greens to vegetables you should avoid, along with a simple rabbit diet chart you can follow daily.

🌿 What Should a Rabbit Eat Daily?

Before we even talk about vegetables, let’s get the foundation right — because this is where most people go wrong.

✔  80–85% = Unlimited Timothy Hay 🌾 (If you’re looking for good quality hay, you can check our Timothy Hay here)
5–10% = Grain-free pellets (I personally prefer Sherwood  - you can explore it here
~15% = Fresh greens 🥬

That’s it.

👉 Greens are just a small part of the diet
👉 Hay is everything (I can’t stress this enough)

I usually stick to a simple routine:
🥬 1 small bowl of greens, twice a day — nothing more

🌱 Daily Rotation Greens (Indian First)

These are the greens I personally find easiest to source in India and rotate regularly:

✔ Coriander (Dhaniya)
✔ Mint (Pudina)
✔ Dill (Soya saak)
✔ Fenugreek leaves (Methi)
✔ Basil (Tulsi)
✔ Capsicum / Bell Peppers (in small amounts)
✔ Cucumber (in small amounts)
✔ Carrot tops
✔ Celery
✔ Wheatgrass

💡 What I usually do:
I mix 2–3 greens instead of giving just one — keeps things balanced and interesting for them.

🌿 Other Safe Greens (When You Want Variety)

Whenever I want to add a little variety (or if I find these fresh), I include:

✔ Italian basil
✔ Peppermint
✔ Fennel leaves (Saunf leaves)
✔ Clover
✔ Arugula
✔ Lemongrass
✔ Thyme
✔ Parsley
✔ Bok choy
✔ Rosemary
✔ Sage
✔ Oregano
✔ Red leafy lettuce
✔ Leafy lettuce
✔ Spring greens
✔ Lemon balm

You don’t need all of these — just rotate based on availability.

⚠️ Vegetables to Be Careful With

This is the part most people ignore… and honestly, where problems usually start.

🧪 High Oxalate Greens (Only 1–2 times a week)

✔ Spinach
✔ Beet greens
✔ Mustard greens
✔ Radish leaves
✔ Watercress

👉 These are like occasional add-ons, not daily greens. I have rarely fed mine with these because there are plenty of options that are safer. High oxalates can interfere with calcium absorption and may lead to long-term health issues like bladder stone , kidney disorders if fed too frequently.

💨 Gas-Causing Vegetables

✔ Cabbage (just 1 small leaf)
✔ Broccoli (1 small floret)
✔ Kale
✔ Brussels sprouts
✔ Cauliflower (1 small floret)

These vegetables can ferment quickly in a rabbit’s gut, leading to gas buildup and discomfort, which can become serious if not controlled.

Carrot should be given only as a treat because it is high in sugar and can upset the digestive system, causing gas or diarrhea.

👉 I always tell people:
Watch the poop. That’s your biggest indicator.

If you notice:

  • Smaller droppings
  • Slightly soft poop
  • Less appetite

❗ Stop immediately — don’t “wait and watch”.

💧 Can Cause Diarrhea

✔ Capsicum
✔ Cucumber
✔ Pumpkin (boiled, ripe)
✔ Carrot

These are not bad — just easy to overdo.

👉 My simple rule:
No more than a 1-inch piece

🌿 Natural Indian Greens (I Use Occasionally)

Sometimes I like adding more natural, desi options:

✔ Banana leaves
✔ Guava leaves
✔ Hibiscus leaves
✔ Marigold leaves
✔ Neem leaves
✔ Moringa
✔ Papaya leaves

Not everyday foods — but great for rotation.

🍓 Treats (Their Favourite Part 😄)

Let’s be honest… this is what they get most excited about.

But I’m very strict here 👇
👉 Treats are not daily food.

Most fruits that we consider “healthy” are actually too high in sugar for rabbits — and giving them daily can slowly mess with their digestion (even if everything looks fine initially).

However, over time I realised something important…

👉 If you do want to give something daily, it has to be formulated specifically for rabbits — not fruits.

And honestly, in India right now,
👉 Sherwood treats are the only ones I trust for this.

They’re made keeping rabbit digestion in mind (no unnecessary sugars or fillers), which makes them a much safer option for regular use.

✔ Fruits & natural treats → 1–2 inch pieces, only twice a week
Sherwood treats can be given daily in small quantity

🌸 Flowers

✔ Rose
✔ Hibiscus
✔ Marigold
✔ Chamomile
✔ Lavender
✔ Dandelion

🍉 Fruits (Seedless only)

✔ Apple
✔ Banana
✔ Mango
✔ Papaya
✔ Guava
✔ Watermelon
✔ Muskmelon
✔ Pear
✔ Pineapple (no skin)
✔ Berries

🚫 What I Never Do

Just sharing my personal non-negotiables:

❌ I don’t feed random kitchen scraps
❌ I don’t overload on vegetables thinking it’s “healthy”
❌ I don’t suddenly change diet
❌ I never replace hay with greens

❤️ A Small Personal Note

Over time, caring for rabbits has taught me something I didn’t expect…

They’re quiet animals.
They don’t “complain” loudly.

So when something goes wrong,
it shows up in subtle ways — their poop, their appetite, their energy.

And if you’re not paying attention, it’s easy to miss.

That’s why I always say:

👉 Rabbit care is not difficult… but it is mindful.

You don’t need to be perfect.
But you do need to observe and learn about your rabbit.

🐰 Simple Daily Feeding Guide (If You Want to Keep It Easy)

✔ Unlimited Timothy Hay 🌾
✔ Grain-free pellets (Sherwood) 🥣
✔ Small bowl greens (twice daily) 🥬
✔ Occasional treats 🍓

🏁 Final Thought

If you take away just one thing from this blog, let it be this:

👉 Hay is the main food. Greens are just support.

If you’re looking to build a healthy rabbit diet, start with high-quality hay and balanced nutrition — it makes all the difference in their digestion, energy, and long-term health.Once you get this right… everything else becomes much easier ❤️
